Welcome to our Local Food page. The purpose of this page is to keep everyone in our community up-to-date on what's happening around food and in our own communities, in the province and nationally. Should you have items of interest, please send them along for review.

Local core food team
We are a group of individuals passionate about the local food system of Lunenburg and Queens. We represent members of the community and organizations such as the South Shore Family Resource Association, the Native Council of Nova Scotia and Public Health Services.

  • The NSFSN is a network of individuals and organizations that have expressed interest in working to build food security in Nova Scotia.

  • Taproot Farms is an organic family farm located in Kings County, of the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. From our hands to your hands, our family grows delicious, nutritious and ethically produced foods for you. Join our CSA and enjoy weekly local produce.

  • Ecology Action Centre: Since 1971, EAC has acted as a voice for Nova Scotia's environment. EAC has been working to build a healthier, more sustainable Nova Scotia. The Centre's earliest projects included recycling, composting, and energy conservation, and these are now widely recognized environmental issues. Our current areas of focus include Built Environment, Marine Issues, Coastal Issues, Wilderness, Food, Transportation and Energy Issues.

  • FEED NOVA SCOTIA is a charitable organization that helps feed hungry people by collecting and distributing food to more than 150 member agency food banks and meal programs, while at the same time striving to eliminate chronic hunger and poverty through research, awareness and support programs.

  • Farmer's Markets of Nova Scotia: Provincial website supporting and promoting farmer's markets.

  • Food Miles Project (Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture). The goal of the project is to define the concept of "food miles" and operationalize the concept in a Nova Scotia context. Specific objectives related to that goal include:
    • Development of an annotated data base of related initiatives in other jurisdictions;
    • Develop information related to the origin of food consumed in Nova Scotia;
    • Develop information related to energy consumption related to imported food;
    • Research the economic, social and environmental impacts of importing food;
    • Research the barriers related to getting more local food in grocery stores, restaurants, and public institutions;
    • The development and testing of educational materials related to the promotion of increased consumption of local food;
    • Communication of research results to the general public, and;
    • Development and advocacy of related policy initiatives.

  • People' s Food Policy Project is a pan-Canadian network of citizens and organizations that is creating Canada's first food sovereignty policy.

  • Slow Food Movement: Slow Food Nova Scotia exists to honour this tradition of experiencing the taste of local food in a social and convivial atmosphere through excursions to farms, special dinners, tastings and public projects.

  • Pollination Project welcomes you, through workshops, seminars and residential fellowships, to explore the inherent connections between healthy food, artistic expression, mindful practices and just society. Set in rural Nova Scotia on a biodynamic farm with 250 acres of woods, fields, lake and river.
